Nomination Statement
Alan Schmidt is an exemplary teacher, role model and public servant. For 11 years, he has taught a variety of physical science and physics classes at Northeast Magnet High School. But more than teach, he has elevated the level of instruction by introducing innovative courses and lobbying for more advanced skill classes to challenge students.
Through his efforts, Northeast Magnet began offering an Aviation Science course three years ago and he personally campaigned to increase the number of young women enrolled.
Alan currently teaches one of the highest levels of science class available - Advanced Placement Physics, a class he pushed for, and trained for, at his own expense and on his own time.
Alan's determination to lift all students by offering them opportunities to learn and succeed is evident by his many volunteer activities. He works closely with students in preparing for Science Olympiad and the Kansas Junior Academy of Science competitions.
In addition to academics, Alan teaches young people civic responsibility and the joy of public service. He organized a group of students to volunteer for the "Autumn in the Air Festival" and for the last three years, Alan has collected money and walked in the "CROP" walk, which provides food and resources for people in under-developed countries.
Alan is a Reno County 4-H leader and has helped with Vacation Bible School at Christ Lutheran Church for 12 years. He has served as church treasurer, youth director and has been a part of the choir and greeting committee.
Public service is a way of life for Alan Schmidt to which a grateful school district and community say "thank you, Alan!"
